Find a Steam DLL's version
An installation guide asks for your Steam DLL version? Here's how I check the original file in Windows.
Using File Explorer
- Open the game's installation folder and search for steam_api.dll or steam_api64.dll, including subfolders such as bin. Use the game's original DLL, not one supplied by an emulator.
- Right-click the file → Properties → Details. Read File version; Product version may also be shown.
- If the field is blank, that DLL has no usable version metadata. Do not invent a version from its date or size. The filename's 64 identifies the architecture, not the API version.
Using PowerShell
You can also read the same metadata without executing the DLL. Replace the example path with your own.
(Get-Item -LiteralPath 'C:\Games\MyGame\steam_api64.dll').VersionInfo | Select-Object FileVersion, ProductVersion
